Text: Ephesians 6:10-18

Theme: STAND UP FOR JESUS DRESSED IN THE FULL ARMOR OF GOD!

Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. Put on the full armor of God so that you can take your stand against the devil's schemes. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.

Which is easier for you to do? To stand up for your Savior, Jesus, and what he tells you in his Word; or, to give into "peer pressure" and do those things and say those things that you know are against God's will? You and I have an Old Adam, a sinful nature that finds it far too easy, far too fun to give into temptation and sin. But, by the grace of God, you and I also have a New Man living inside of our hearts; a New Man who loves the Word of God; a New Man who finds great joy in living in such a way as to give all praise and thanks to the Savior-God. There is a war going on that you and I can't see. Yet, it is a war we are all personally involved in. It is a fight taking place between our Old Adam and our New Man for control of your heart and mine. As you and I battle our Old Adam, as you and I battle against the devil and the sinful world around us, you and I STAND UP FOR JESUS DRESSED IN THE FULL ARMOR OF GOD!

Led by God the Holy Spirit, the Apostle Paul paints a picture in our mind's eye of a soldier getting ready for battle. As Christians, you and I are fighting a spiritual battle that we need to be armed and ready to fight. God's Word describes the battle in this way: "Put on the full armor of God so that you can take your stand against the devil's schemes. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms."

To fight off these spiritual enemies, the Lord has given us THE most powerful weapon we need: his almighty Word. It is only from the Word of our God that we are given other weapons we need for our spiritual warfare. Listen again to the list of weapons: "the belt of truth"..."the breastplate of righteousness"..."feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace"..."the shield of faith"... the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit".

How are you and I able to defend ourselves from our spiritual enemies? On our own, the only result would be defeat. But, on Easter Sunday, as our Champion, Jesus Christ, rose from the dead, he won a great victory over our spiritual enemies. By his grace, he has given us that victory to enjoy as well. By the power that comes only through the Word of our Lord, with our victorious Savior at our side, we are able to win the battle. As we read, "Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand."
How are you and I able to stand strong, to hold our ground, when "the day of evil comes"; when sin and Satan attack? If we try to fight the battle on our own the only result will be eternal damnation in hell. But, the battle against sin is not a hopeless one. It is a battle that we are able to win. You and I are able to stand up for Jesus. How? By being dressed in the full armor of God. And the way you and I get dressed in the full armor of God is by spending more and more time in his holy Word.

Are you one of those who at this time are not making use of the opportunities you have to join your brothers and sisters in Christ in a study of God's almighty Word either on Sunday Mornings or during the week? Throw aside the excuses of why you aren't coming, and put your armor on instead. Get into the Word. Don't come simply because a preacher tells you that you should be there. Rather, come to Bible class to be filled with the power that only the Word is able to give to you. The more time you and I spend in the Word of our God, our God-given faith in Jesus as our one and only Savior grows and becomes stronger. Only the Word of our God has the power to change the lives of his people so that they eagerly and willingly live for their Savior and support the Gospel ministry with the best of their time, talents and treasures. Earlier in this same letter to the Ephesians, Paul writes this encouragement, "Be made new in the attitude of your minds...put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness...Be imitators of God, therefore, as dearly loved children and live a life of love, just as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us as a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God."

In a sin-filled world that is increasing in wickedness, there are many things that are available to Satan to make us spiritually weak. Greater than any battle against terrorism, we are fighting a battle against The Terrorist, the Devil, who is waging a war against us each and every day. How are you and I able to fight off temptations and sin? Remember that we don't fight the battle on our own. The victorious, Almighty Savior, Jesus Christ, is by our side each and every day. Jesus battled against the devil in our place, and crushed his head in a great defeat on Easter Sunday. And the Good News for you and me is that the Lord promises to make us strong as we spend time in his Word. With the blessing of God the Holy Spirit, may each one of us here this morning STAND UP FOR JESUS DRESSED IN THE FULL ARMOR OF GOD! Amen.
