Sermon Text:  Matthew 11:28-30

Sermon Theme:  REJOICE THAT JESUS CAME TO GIVE YOU REST!

"Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light."

This is the Word of the Lord.

I would like to begin by asking you a question: Raise your hand if you have already taken a vacation this summer or plan to take a vacation yet some time this summer. Most of us use this time of year to "get away" for a little while. We may use this time to see friends or family that we haven't visited with for some time. Some may use a vacation to visit historical places around our country. But one of the key reasons why most people take a vacation is to take some time away from their regular day-to-day schedules. For most, vacation is a time for rest. In our worship service today, we have gathered around the Word of our God and heard our Lord offer us his rest. While physical rest is important for our bodies, the spiritual rest our Savior gives to us is the most important rest we enjoy. As we as a congregation celebrate our Annual "Christmas in July" this weekend, as we hear our Savior, Jesus, speak to us in Matthew chapter 11, REJOICE THAT JESUS CAME TO GIVE YOU REST!

As we consider our Savior's words before us, we immediately find the source of the rest we enjoy. Our Savior says, "Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest." At certain times during the year, like Christmas time, many folks make it a point to be in church. Why? Perhaps, at a time like Christmas, people are searching for a peace and rest they know they aren't going to find from the things of this world.

But, despite all their searching, there are many, many folks who are missing the one person who is able to offer them true and lasting rest. Jesus Christ is the only place a soul, troubled and burdened by sin, can find the rest it is looking for. The rest Jesus Christ promises to us here and throughout the Gospels is the wonderful, undeserved gift of forgiveness of all of our sins. You and I know from our God's Word that this forgiveness Jesus won for all people in the world; and through the gift of faith from God the Holy Spirit, that forgiveness becomes our very own. As we celebrate our annual "Christmas in July" event again this year, we remember that God the Father's one and only Son, Jesus Christ, came to this earth to restore our relationship with our Father in heaven.

Our loving Savior says to you and me today: "Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light." Our God's once perfect creation has been ruined by sin. Because of this sin that is in our world, there are many burdens, many difficulties we must face day after day. I'm certain that not one of us here today would think of our burdens as "light", as something easy for us to carry. But there is the problem. Does Jesus ask you and me to carry these burdens on our own? Are we all alone as we live our lives? The answer to that question is a very clear "NO!" Our loving Savior made you and me a promise when he said, "Surely, I will be with you always!" Jesus Christ is your relief. Jesus Christ is your rescue. Jesus Christ is your rest.

In our Gospel Lesson for this Sunday, our Savior gives you and me a gracious invitation when he says, "Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest." The question for each one of us to consider is: "Are you listening to this invitation of Jesus?" Are you walking away from your Savior or walking toward him? It is your one and only Savior who comes to you today with open and loving arms, and says, "Come to me". . . "Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light."

After a long day of work, you look forward to relaxing for a while at home. After a day filled with activities, you look forward to a good night's sleep. Today, our Savior comes to us in his Word and in his Sacrament to offer you and me the rest for our souls that only he is able to provide. My dear friends in Christ, rejoice that Jesus came to give you rest. Rejoice that it is Jesus your Savior who says, "Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest." Amen.
